Because of his reflections, Yefimich gradually became more withdrawn. The stupidity and selfishness of society caused him deep emotional pain; he found comfort only in the ward, talking with Gromov. In fact, Chekhov, by exposing the true face of society, conveys an absurd and grim reality — that the patients in the asylum are, in fact, intelligent, while many supposedly “intelligent” people in society are dull and insensitive.
